Habib Ahmad bin Alwi bin Hasan bin Abdullah Al-Haddad Qurfha was born in Qurfha, Hadramaut, Tarim, Yemen, on the 26th of Shaban 1254 H to coincide with November 14, 1838. He studied from his own father Al Habib Alwi Al Haddad, Al Habib Ali Bin Husein Al Haddad, Al Habib Abdurrahman Bin Abdullah Al Habsyi, and to the sacred Habib of Empang Bogor, Al Habib Abdullah Bin Mukhsin Al Attas. Since childhood he has been trading as well as the Prophet. Trading made him get to know the Southeast Asia region, and even got success in Singapore. Habib Ahmad frequently appeared in the Ulama Council of the Habaib circles in Jakarta, which was centered in the residence of Habib Ali Al-Habsyi Kwitang. However, he is better known by the people of Bogor, because he spends a lot of time there. His closeness to the people of Bogor can be seen from the nickname "Kuncung" which is then attached to him. Habib Ahmad is nicknamed "Habib Kuncung" because he often wears the skull cap given to him by Bugis aristocrats in the shape of a cone or kuncung (tapers upwards). The Bugis kingdom gave a special skullcap because Habib Ahmad had a large karomah among the Bugis aristocrats at that time.
Habib Kuncung lived like a traveler until his history was not clearly known, in the past when he was studying and trading he always moved. The Netherlands, Malaysia, Singapore, Batavia, and Makassar, are some of the places he explored. Habib Ahmad met and married his wife in Makassar. They had one prince who died before giving birth until his line was cut off. He was present and known to the public as a mysterious but highly knowledgeable scholar. Habib Kuncung is a person who has khariqul a'dah or a person who has more abilities beyond human nature in general. Habib Kuncung is commonly referred to in guardian language as an expert in the darkah, meaning when a person is in trouble and in dire need of help, then Habib Kuncung will appear suddenly to help the person. Many people who when faced with a serious problem face him and ask for advice or fatwa, if they can meet, Habib Kuncung will definitely give advice that refers to the Qur’an and Hadith.
Although many consider it strange, but people remember Habib Kuncung as a respected person who is pious and tawadhu (humble, not arrogant). He never wanted to receive a gift, either money or clothes, and appear as he was. He did not want people to adore him excessively and lead to cultization. However, no one doubts the capacity of Habib Kuncung as Waliyullah.
It is said that during the funeral procession of Habib Kuncung something unusual happened. The original Habib Kuncung will be buried in the family cemetery complex of Habib Toha Bin Ja’far Al Haddad, after being prayed at the At Taubah Mosque, his body could not be lifted to be put in the grave even though it has mobilized up to 10 people. Habib Toha then performed the sunnah prayer of bisyaroh, and it turned out that shohibul maqom (corpse) wanted to be buried in the family funeral of Habib Abdulloh Bin Ja’far Al Haddad, next to the At Taubah Mosque. While still alive, Habib Kuncung once instructed Habib Muhammad Bin Abdulloh bin Ja’far Al Haddad to make a small house, meaning that is where Habib Kuncung wanted to be buried, at the funeral of Abdulloh Bin Ja’far Al Haddad’s family.
Many people visit the sacred grave of Al Habib Ahmad Bin Alwi Al Haddad Habib Kuncung. People make pilgrimages while contemplating the way of life that should be lived with tawadhu and intact piety, as exemplified by Rasulullah and lived by Habib Kuncung during his life. In front of Habib Kuncung's grave there is an 85-year-old water tank. One of the rituals performed by pilgrims at Habib Kuncung's grave is to drink the karomah water in the barrel. His presence near the grave convinced the pilgrims that the water in the bucket automatically also prayed. That is why it is considered a watery house. However, this opinion must be considered carefully, so that there is no "polytheism" because it assumes there is a miracle after drinking the water. The essence of our pilgrimage is to pray for rahimahulloh as proof of love for the scholars, as well as to remember death until there is a strong determination in the heart to improve intention and worship to Allah. It means that we must not compare the power of God with anything other than Him, including water.
