Kali Besar is a term for river flow that flows parallel to the Ciliwung river, formerly Kali Besar was the center of trade and economy. In the 17th century, in the early days of Batavia, ships used to sail along the canal until Kali Besar, unloading, and ship repairs were also carried out in the Shipyard in front of the old castle but due to sand dumps in the estuary and the increasing size of the ship was not just pass the canal. Then the ships were pulled by horses and slaves. For large vessels, passengers and cargo are relegated to small vessels / barges. Around Kali Besar there are many office buildings, shops and houses.
