Jakarta, Indonesia’s first international modern and contemporary art museum will be officially opened in beginning 2017. This museum is located in Kebon Jeruk, West Jakarta.
The museum will be named as MACAN Museum (Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantara. This museum is built and sponsored by Indonesian businessman, Haryanto Adikoesoemo.
Thomas J. Berghuis, a curator of Chinese Art in Guggenheim museum, New York will be the director of MACAN Museum. He is famous for his excellent works on events like Jakarta Biennale, and Artjog Festival.
“I wish someday that this museum could be the host for art trading or information between Indonesia and the other countries. That way, the other countries will know Indonesian arts, and international art exhibitions could take place in Indonesia,” said Adikoesoemo.
Adikoesoemo will create programs and exhibitions in the museum. Berghuis, the museum director, have the access to use Haryanto Adikoesoemo’s art collections, which are about 800 pieces of modern and contemporary art.
Those Adikoesoemo’s collections came from famous artist such as Raden Saleh, Affandi, Gerhard Richter, Anish Kapoor, Jeff Koons, and Frank Stella.
