Deskripsi Event :
“ONCE”, West Australian Ballet tour to Jakarta to be held on 6 August 2016 (7.30PM) and 7 August 2016(1PM) in Teater Jakarta, Taman Ismail Marzuki will be West Australian Ballet’s first visit to Jakarta in 20 years. By doing so, WAB will also be the first ever ballet company to visit Indonesia in an international tour.
Despite its presence in Indonesia since 1920’s , ballet never really took off as a popular art. The main reason is because the ballet performances in Indonesia are mostly young students’ performances. Professional-level performances are few and far in between. International ballet companies rarely consider Indonesia as their international tour destination and they often question if there is any demand for a professional ballet production in Indonesia at all.
This quite pessimistic view on ballet in Indonesia is also catching on the Indonesian ballet students. Despite 10+ years training of international ballet syllabus, examinations in front of international juries, and some receiving internationally acclaimed awards, being a professional ballet dancer is not really an option for Indonesian students. The desire to be a professional ballet dancer is most definitely present, there is simply a lack of opportunity and professional positions in Indonesia. No professional ballet company exists to this day in Indonesia, while ballet companies in other Asian countries (Korean National Ballet, Ballet Philippines, Singapore Dance Theatre, Bangkok City Ballet, etc.) have long existed, and bring jobs and pride to their country.
Due to audience enthusiasm to The 1st Indonesian Ballet Gala conducted last year with Juliet Burnett performing as a guest artist with West Australian Ballet Demi soloist Christopher Hill, WAB believes that there is a substantial audience for quality ballet performances in Indonesia. Withless than a year of preparation, WAB is ready to perform live in front of Jakarta audiences with support from the Australian Embassy Jakarta and ballet.id (Yayasan Bina Ballet Indonesia, the organizer of the 1st Indonesian Ballet Gala). Nine works ranging from classical to modern and neo-classical ballets by Australian choreographers will be performed in the first act, and anexcerpt from Cinderella will be performed in second act.
Understanding the hunger of Indonesian ballet students to be part of a ballet company, WAB decided to give a remarkable opportunity to allow Indonesian dancers and dance students to get a glimpse on what it’s like to be in a ballet company. After being auditioned by WAB on 19 June 2016 in Teater Jakarta, 20 dancers ranging from 11 – 36 years old have been selected to train and perform with WAB in the August show. Dubbed the Indonesian Youth Ensemble, the dancers will be performing in 2 new works choreographed by WAB’s Education & Access Manager Deborah Robertson.
It is not only the dancers who will benefit from training with WAB. Understanding how vital stage crew (lighting, sound, stage management) are to a performance, WAB has also openedan opportunity for Indonesian stage workers to take part in the show in an on-the-job training and best-practice sharing to be conducted on 2 – 7 August in Teater Jakarta. Experienced stage workers from various theatres and ballet institutions will take part of this program as Indonesian Stage Apprentices.
The Youth Ensemble and Knowledge Exchange Programs have been made possible thanks to generous support from Australian Embassy Jakarta. (http://ballet.id/wab)
