One of the longest running art spaces in Jakarta, Galeri Hadiprana fist opened its doors in 1962, a time when Jakarta was a very different place. Back then, the gallery was one of the only spaces in the city where Indonesian artists could exhibit their work. In fact, Hendra Hadiprana set up the venture specifically to provide space for up-and-coming artists after he came back to Jakarta from studying in the Netherlands. Throughout the years, Hadiprana has mentored fresh talent who were to become some of Indonesia’s most famous artists, including Yusuf Affendi and Made Gunawan. The gallery, which is not located in a new space in the trendy neighbourhood of Kemang, still hosts regular exhibitions of paintings, sculptures and photography, among many others.
