JAKARTA –  Jakarta City Goverment Tourism and Culture Office will restore Kota Intan Bridge in the Old City Area, West Jakarta. The bridge restoration will begin on  July 2019.
 
"The total budget for the restoration  of Kota Intan Bridge is Rp. 2.9 billion," Head of art and Culture  Division Jakarta City Goverment Tourism and Culture Office  Gumilar Ekalaya said, as reported by the Jakarta News Agency on Tuesday (12/3).
 
This bridge is close to the Sunda Kelapa area, precisely in the Kali Besar area, which became the center of shipping and trade at that time. According to him, restoration needs to be done because the bridge has been damaged in several parts.
 
"The stages of the Kota Intan Bridge restoration are currently being processed in the Cultural Heritage Expert Team and the Restoration Assembly Team. After the auction is completed," he said.
 
Gumilar said, the Kota Intan Bridge became one of the cultural reserves in an important capital city. Therefore, restoration cannot be done carelessly. As is known, the Kota Intan  Bridge is the oldest bridge in Indonesia. This bridge was built by Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC) in 1628.
 
The Kota Intan Bridge has been renamed repeatedly, starting from Engelse Burg or the British Bridge. The bridge was built near the stronghold of the British troops, precisely on the east of the bridge.
 
This bridge has a long history, one of the stories is that in 1628-1629 it was the target of Dutch attacks by Banten and Mataram forces. After the damage caused by this attack, the bridge was rebuilt and was named the "Pasar Ayam Bridge" or Hoenderpasarburg, because it was close to the chicken market.
 
The Pasar ayam Bridge was damaged by flooding, so it was repaired again and given a new name Het Middelpunt Burg or "Central Bridge". In fact, this bridge has also been renamed the Queen Juliana Bridge because it was repaired by the queen.
 
It was only after Indonesian independence, his name became the Kota Intan Bridge, in accordance with its exact location at the end of the fortress of Batavia Castle, which was named Bastiin Diamont (Intan).
 
Uniquely, even though the name changes constantly, but the shape and style of the architecture does not change, it remains as we see it today.
